As of 2026, an Indian passport gets you into roughly 60 countries without arranging a visa in advance — either fully visa-free or with a visa stamped on arrival — and into dozens more on a quick online e-visa or ETA. The easiest for travellers from India are Thailand, Indonesia (Bali), the Maldives, Sri Lanka, the UAE, Malaysia, Nepal and Bhutan. This guide lists them honestly, by how the visa actually works — because "visa-free" and "visa on arrival" are not the same thing at the airport.

First, the three categories that matter

Visa-free means you walk up to immigration with just your passport. Visa on arrival (VoA) means you *do* get a visa — you just get it at the destination airport, usually with a fee, photo and sometimes a queue. e-Visa / ETA means you apply online before you fly and carry a printout. Mixing these up is the single most common reason travellers get turned away at boarding, so always confirm which one applies to *your* trip.

Know before you go: which of the three visa types applies to your destination.

Visa-free for Indian passport holders

These popular destinations need no visa at all for a tourist visit (durations vary, so check your allowed stay): [Nepal](/visa/nepal) and [Bhutan](/visa/bhutan) (our Himalayan neighbours), [Mauritius](/visa/mauritius), Fiji, Barbados, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, and several island nations. Nepal and Bhutan are the classic first "abroad without a visa" trips for Gujarati families.

Visa on arrival

Here the visa is issued when you land — carry photos, the fee in cash and your return ticket. Popular VoA destinations for Indians include the [Maldives](/visa/maldives) (free on arrival), [Thailand](/visa/thailand) (visa on arrival or exemption depending on the current policy), [Indonesia / Bali](/visa/indonesia), the Seychelles, Laos, Cambodia and Jordan. Rules here change often — Thailand in particular flips between exemption and VoA — so we confirm the live position before you book.

e-Visas and ETAs are applied for online days before you fly — never at the airport.

e-Visa and ETA — apply online before you fly

The fastest-growing category. A few days before travel you fill an online form, upload a photo and passport scan, pay, and receive an approval by email. This covers the [UAE / Dubai](/visa/dubai), [Vietnam](/visa/vietnam), [Malaysia](/visa/malaysia) (currently visa-free but with an online entry card), [Turkey](/visa/turkey), [Azerbaijan](/visa/azerbaijan), [Georgia](/visa/georgia), [Kazakhstan](/visa/kazakhstan), [Uzbekistan](/visa/uzbekistan), [Sri Lanka](/visa/sri-lanka) (ETA), [Qatar](/visa/qatar), [Oman](/visa/oman), [Kenya](/visa/kenya) (ETA) and [Egypt](/visa/egypt). Approvals usually land in 24–72 hours, but leave a week to be safe.

The catch nobody tells you

Visa policies for Indian passports change with almost no notice — a country can suspend visa-on-arrival, add an ETA, or change fees overnight. A list you read online in January can be wrong by March. Never book non-refundable flights on the strength of an old blog (including this one) without confirming the current rule for your exact passport and travel date.
